Smartphone Round Robin: Initial Impressions on the iPhone

I'll keep using the iPhone for the rest of the week and there's a strong chance it has found a permanent place in my gear bag (for movies) unless someone wants to trade for a 16gb iPod Touch. As my “main brain,” though, I'm not optimistic I can recommend it to a large swath of my readership. Which is to say: it's superb for people who don't need a smartphone for productivity, it's probably not going to cut it for those who do.

iPhone vs Windows Mobile, Email Smackdown

I got these in my e-mail before he did (so much for push e-mail), was able to go to 5 different testing sites and resolve the issue on my EDGE connection all before he was able to open even the first site to start troubleshooting on his EVDO connection.... Unlike the WM and Palm users who can’t see many of the inline attachments or HTML messages, I see the entire message which makes it much easier to actually reply to the message and conduct business on the road.

Wake3: WebKit (That's Safari to you) on Windows Mobile Coming Soon

It makes me green with envy and gives me a bad attitude overall - Think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Raphael on a bad day. After using WebKit is the world’s best mobile web browser, used on Apple’s iPhone and Nokia’s Series 60 handsets.

The First Device

I’m in the midst of writing Part 3 of my iPhone vs HTC Touch series (Part 1 here and Video Part 2 here), partially because my comrade Mike over at the iPhone blog Phone different has announced that he’s going to call me out on our iPhone podcast because I recently used the phrase “iPhone killer” in my Sprint Touch Hands-on Impressions. The upshot of that link heavy introduction is that I have a new concept in my arsenal of smartphone punditry that I learned from the Foleo and its curious absence (of all things): The First Device.

iPhone Price Drop - Serious Competition for Windows Mobile

Everybody’s atwitter about the iPod announcements yesterday and here’s what I think it means for WM: First - that iPod Touch, if Apple ever decides to get serious about adding PDA functionality, is serious competition for the non-smartphone PDA market.... I’m equal parts filled with rage for paying a $200 early adopter fee, and equal parts filled with glee for a $200 price cut.

WhoNeedsAniPhone developing Flash iPhone-like Interface

When I opened up a new project for a Windows Moblie device in CS3 and started digging around it became clear to me… THIS WOULD BE A FANTASTIC DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT TO BUILD A NEW COOL INTERFACE FOR A WINDOWS MOBILE PHONE! Thats when I started playing around… and within only a few hours I was able to have a new launcher screen up and running with shortcuts to several apps on my device sporting full PNG transparency support, a full screen interface, and interactive and dynamic content using the wonders of Flash itself!

Yes, there's an "iPhone Keyboard" for WM, But You Still Want SPB.

I know, I know, everybody’s all atwitter over various iPhone software elements making their way to Windows Mobile.... screenshots.html I much This application won’t analyze your next possible character like the iPhone does, but it is a skin for the Windows Mobile keyboard so you’ll still get the native predictive word functions that you normally have.

Good iPhone Review

Over at Phone different, Mike Overbo just posted his full review of the iPhone. There are a lot of little surprising bits in there, so it's definitely worth the read. Since I'm slowly becoming the "iPhone troll in residence" amongst our little family of sites, I'm going to post the relevant 'graf for WM users (For featurephone users, it's a 9/10, btw):

HTC Touch vs iPhone, Part 1

Here they are on my desk, sitting quietly next to each other. On the inside, though, both are smoldering cauldrons of hate and jealousy.
