I'll admit that Google's announcement of the Android Platform had its intended effect on me: I saw the list of folks on board, I heard that an 'early SDK' is coming on Monday, and I believed that not only was Android not vaporware, but it was something pretty significant. Today things look a little shakier - Who's in control of what parts? Just how locked-down will some of these things be? What guarantee will there be than an app will work on disparate versions of Android (hello Symbian)?

The Unwired shows us details from a recent patent application from Microsoft. Normally, the right reaction to patent applications is to shrug, perhaps engage in some wishful thinking, and then move on. One can rarely tell whether or not a given patent represents actual plans for devices or just a company covering its bases when an employee has an inte a list centered around a user’s current day can include items corresponding to meetings scheduled for that day using a calendar application, E-Mail received on that day through an E-Mail application, and a weather forecast for the day provided by a weather service application.

That seems to be the case, check out the details that crossed the wires yesterday: Starting on Tuesday, when Sprint Nextel customers use the search bar in their phone browsers, the results will automatically incorporate the users’ location. Some customers will also be able to use voice commands to conduct searches. The capabilities are an extension of a relationship that Microsoft and Sprint formed late last year that initially involved including Microsoft’s Live Search in the browser on Sprint phones.

The “Microsoft Connection Cantina,” held at Jillian’s sports bar in San Francisco’s Metreon, used free drinks and food such as “CE dip” and “embedded nachos” to lure Penguinistas from the convention center across the street. And it worked: Hall blogged before the event that “there’s already a crowd waiting outside the bar.” Read: Did LinuxWorld survive Microsoft’s Mike Hall?

Just had to follow up on yesterday afternoon’s post about Microsoft and Linux developers. I came across this mystifying site this morning: By embracing diverse application development approaches and partner business models, Microsoft participates in a world of choice in which individuals and organizations can pursue their goals based on what uniquely inspires them, including open source.

I’ve done my best thus far to avoid making jokes about Microsoft being the Borg, or an Evil Empire, or whatever. I’m only human, though, I did post a sweaty photo of Steve Ballmer Microsoft’s Windows Embedded team is offering “the biggest selection of [free] apps outside of Moscone Center,” in connection with next week’s LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco.

So the New York Times just did a write up on Bill Gates' impending (semi)retirement and what it means for Microsoft. Of course the message is that all is well, nobody's worried, everything's fine, move along, nothing to see here, etc etc. On page two, though, we get some nice bits about how Microsoft feels about the oft-rumored Google Phone. Let's take a look:
“How many products, of all the Google products that have been introduced, how many of them are profit-making products?” he asked. “They’ve introduced about 30 different products; they have one profit-making product. So, you’re now making a prediction without ever seeing the software that they’re going to have the world’s best phone and it’s going to be free?”**Zing!** I have a few thoughts on this quote and a bit of editorial after the break. Because Apple's entrance into this space and Google's rumbling have **finally** made this the conventional wisdom about smartphones: **It's the software, Stupid!**

What might look like bad news, a posting of a big loss, actually bodes well for the future: According to the report, the Online Services Group, which includes Windows Live, lost 732 million dollars this year, way up from the 74 million that they lost the previous year.... The report sites, “increased data center costs in our Online Services Business,” as the reason for the extra losses.

Earlier this year, Microsoft launched the newest version of Windows Mobile (version 6) and there’s a slew of devices built on the new mobile OS (we have video of them here) with more coming (like the new HTC touchscreen handset). But even with the new software and gear, the “if we build it, they will come” strategy is not a good one in the face of a foe like Apple.
