Before we get to the doom and gloom, let’s remember that Sprint has a few good things going for it: Great data plans on 3G um… Ok, ok, they do have the Mogul and the Sprint Touch is coming soon (a little bird Forsee, who has also served as chairman and president, has come under fire as telecommunications giant Sprint’s subscriber growth and share price have disappointed investors.

So Verizon will let you change your plan without re-upping your contract.... Verizon, like all carriers, are very unforgiving about letting you get out of contracts early without paying early cancellation fees.

Verizon is now slightly less evil than they were before (full disclosure, I think pretty much all wireless carriers are evil): starting on October 7th they will allow you to change your plan without renewing your contract.

AT&T put up a teaser site for the Motorola Q9H. They’re really not helping the name confusion by just calling it the “Motorola Q Global” on the site, but I suppose it is a nice way to poke at it’s already-released cousin the Q9M.

Motorola Ditches Qualcomm, Cuts R&D

Moto is switching to Texas Instruments for their cell radios, primarily because of “business reasons.” I’d bet dollars to donuts that one of those “business reasons” is that Qualcomm is looking like they’re never going to get out We believe Motorola’s decision was purely business as our technical contacts had suggested many Qualcomm-based [third-generation] WCDMA designs in the pipeline and a general preference amongst Motorola designers for Qualcomm, despite the higher pricing. Our checks reveal that Motorola found Qualcomm “hard to do business with,” which we interpret as either too high-priced, or also having something to do with the royalty rates.

Well look what the BoyGeniusReport dragged in: a supposed spreadsheet - er, it’s definitely a spreadsheet, what’s supposed is that it’s an internal Verizon document. The document purports to show some August release dates: specifically for the Q9M (Aug 20)and the poorly-named UTStarcom VX6800.

Qualcomm Chip Ban Continues

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit dismissed Qualcomm’s request for a stay of the ban, saying that it can’t consider a stay until a presidential review period is over. U.S. President George Bush has 60 days following the U.S. International Trade Commission’s decision from June 7 to overturn the ban.

Verizon Makes An End Run Around 3G Chip Ban

Under a licensing agreement, Verizon will pay Broadcom $6 for every handset, PDA, or data card that uses EvDO (Evolution-Data Optimized) mobile broadband technology. The carrier will make the payments up to a ceiling of $40 million per calendar quarter and a lifetime maximum of $200 million.

Apparently that’s not going to hot, as Reuters is reporting that Alltel is, in fact, shopping itself around to its big brothers.... (AT.N: Quote, Profile , Research) has stepped up efforts to sell itself to carriers such as AT&T Inc. (T.N: Quote, Profile , Research), Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ.N: Quote, Profile , Research) and Sprint Nextel Corp.
